What To Wear For Newborn Photos

What To Wear For Newborn Photos

Newborn photos are an amazing way to document your little one’s growth and make for a memorable bonding moment. Aside from choosing the right location, knowing what to wear for newborn photos helps ensure beautiful shots you can cherish for years to come and share with friends and family members. While newborn photography sessions focus more on the baby, Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother, or other family members also may join the shoot. So, what should you wear for a newborn photography session?

Stylish but Comfortable

For all parents, and especially new moms, feeling good in what you’re wearing when stepping in front of the camera is key. These memories will last a lifetime, and you want to make it the best experience possible. Browse different outfits well in advance, and try them on. Pregnancy has likely changed the way certain clothes fit on Mom. The general rule is that what you wore around 5 months will fit comfortably.

You may also feel best in soft, breathable materials. Tight clothes, clingy fabrics, and stiff designs could leave you feeling hot, itchy, and self-conscious. Ultimately, it’s all about what makes you smile when you look in the mirror. The same goes for dads, siblings, and others involved in the photos. I may have you try out different poses standing, sitting, laying down, kneeling, and much more, to get the perfect shot. Comfortable clothes will help make sure you can move from photo to photo with ease.

Choose The Right Color Scheme

Fashion trends come and go, so most parents go with neutral colors when choosing what to wear for newborn photos. Think white, grey, navy, and other similar colors. This creates timeless photographs and prevents color casting on your skin and makes for a softer look. If multiple family members are joining in, make sure your outfits coordinate. They don’t need to be the same color but should look natural when you stand next to one another. I am always available to guide you through choosing outfits that coordinate.

Although most photographers shy away from bright and colorful shades, used correctly they can add just the right pop of color to your images With the right newborn photographer, it can really compliment the baby photos and coordinate with your home for a more impactful display when the canvas hangs on the wall. I am happy to work with you to choose what colors you want the baby to be surrounded by to match with what you are envisioning.  You can visit this page for more information about choosing your color scheme.

Minimize Patterns, Prints, and Graphics

Avoid patterns, prints, logos, and graphic designs when selecting outfits for you and your loved ones. They may not go with the background of your newborn photos, can distract from your baby’s adorable face, and they aren’t always timeless. If you, your partner or a sibling wants to wear an outfit with pinstripes, polka dots, or another subtle pattern, that’s okay. Just make sure only one or two of you are in a patterned outfit, so you don’t clash with one another.

Explore Different Textures

Textures can be a great way to enhance the three-dimensional effect of your newborn photography, like comfortable knit fabrics and lace designs. Think about how your clothing will look against your little one. Thick knit sweaters, cozy cashmere, and other soft fabrics could make for the perfect newborn photo as you cradle your baby.

When deciding what to wear for newborn photos, avoid anything rough, itchy, or uncomfortable that could interfere with your comfort during the session or upset your little one’s delicate skin. If you choose something warm, consider bringing a change of clothes, too. My studio is typically kept warm during newborn photos, so we can keep your baby cozy during outfit changes.

Consider Your Style Preferences When Deciding What to Wear for Newborn Photos

I aim to create newborn photos you’ll love and display on your walls, tabletops, and other home areas. When choosing your outfit, think about your home decor style and where the newborn photos will be put up. If you plan to take newborn pictures for wall art, you’ll want to ensure they coordinate well within your home.

Looking around your home can also be a source of inspiration. If your living room is boho-inspired, going for a natural-colored long dress with flowy bell sleeves might be best. If your home is more minimalist, you might opt for a simple off-white jumpsuit or traditional long-sleeve blouse. With your design preferences in mind, you’re sure to have an easier time choosing what to wear for newborn photos.

Prioritize Your Baby’s Comfort

I have a variety of swaddles, wraps, and other accessories to use during your newborn photography session. However, you might have something specific in mind. Many parents want their child photographed in a particular outfit, hat, swaddle, or another piece of clothing. If that’s important to you, feel free to talk to me about bringing it along so we can incorporate it into the shoot. Think about special touches and keepsakes as well. Is there a rattle that’s been passed down through your family? Is there a small teddy bear you plan to gift your little one? Do you want to see them in a particular animal hat? Brainstorm what personal touches you want to be included in your photos. I’ll be more than happy to bring your vision to life.

Deciding what to wear for newborn photos can feel like a daunting process. However, it doesn’t have to be. Make sure you’re comfortable, wear coordinating colors, be careful with patterns, experiment with different textures, and think about how your baby will look as you and your loved ones hold them for photos. This experience is all about you, your baby, and anyone involved in the photo shoot, so everyone must look and feel their best.
