Is 2 weeks too old for newborn photos?

This is a question I get asked a lot!  A typical newborn session in my studio will take place when the baby is 1-3 weeks old.   A 2 week old newborn is obviously right in that range!   However, it is not the end all be all age for photos.  Some (most) photographers have a preference for younger babies.  Some for older babies. It is most important to recognize that your baby is never too old for beautiful photos.
Most clients do book during pregnancy.  There will certainly always be those that either deliver early or don’t decide to book until after baby arrives.  While I try my best to accommodate everyone, it cannot always be done in a typical timeframe.  Once a baby is over about 3-4 weeks, they are also more awake.  They are also less happy to be positioned into the most curly and swaddled poses.  Our expectations for the images do change as a baby grows, but as you’ll see in my video, even a 3 month old baby can be expertly swaddled by a professional photographer.
So, is 2 weeks too old for newborn photos?  No, not absolutely.  For most babies, sooner is better than later, but some need more time.  It is also important to allow time for the birthing parent to heal and for parents and baby to adjust to this new life.  Anyone who pre-books with me receives my soonest availability when they are ready to schedule.
More important than focusing on the exact date of your baby’s session, is to ensure that you know when to book your session to allow us ample time to plan for an amazing experience!
