How do you know if the photographer you have chosen has the skills and experience to handle and photograph your newborn? Many parents have told me that looking for a licensed newborn photographer is difficult, and that’s true because there isn’t a newborn photography license program that an individual can complete. This may be a disservice to the trade, as it is imperative that parents are able to trust the photographer they choose for such a delicate subject.
That said, I am proud to say that in my 14+ years as a newborn photographer, I have put education in the field as a priority. In addition to photographing thousands of babies, I have completed numerous courses on newborn posing, safety, and care that have allowed me to better focus on what matters most – the comfort and safety of your baby! So while there is no such thing as a newborn photographer license, there are multiple courses and certifications that can be completed by photographers.
One of the most important certifications that a photographer can complete is Safety Certification from Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International. In addition to the completion of this course, I have received accreditation from APNPI in Newborn Photography. I also spent my first 6 years as a newborn photographer in a hospital setting which came with its own training on safety. Working alongside nurses who were an invaluable resource for additional learning about newborn care, was awesome!
In conclusion, no, there isn’t a specific license for newborn photography. But don’t let this discourage you. Look for certifications held by your photographer. These will tell you their skill level, safety training, and experience.
