What Safety Protocols are in Place for My Newborn Session?

Comfortably Posed Newborn Photos

All great parents want to keep their baby safe and comfortable. Being a parent myself, I know the feeling of wanting what’s best for my child. This is one reason why I have so many safety protocols in place for my newborn sessions. Also, a safe baby, is a comfortable baby. Moreover, comfortable babies make for beautiful images!

Even before COVID was a household name, safety for newborns was a key component of my business and sessions in the studio. Now, more safety protocols have to keep up with the changes in our world. This means more cleaning. More distancing. And overall, More precautions.

Safety Protocols for Babies in the Studio

As the owner and photographer at Jennifer McNeil Photography, I am fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as well as other viruses and illnesses. Being vaccinated against things like Measles, Covid, Chicken Pox, and the Flu, means that I am far less likely to carry and spread these viruses to susceptible children, or adults.

In addition to being a fully vaccinated newborn photographer, I also continue to mask for all types of sessions in the studio and clean props and other surfaces thoroughly between sessions.  All laundry is washed with free & clear detergent, hypoallergenic to be sure your baby’s skin does not react with any added fragrance or dyes that other detergents have.

These policies and protocols are kept in place to keep you and your baby safe.

Safe Posing for Newborns

Keeping baby’s safe during a newborn session isn’t only about protecting them from illness.  Safe posing standards must also be used in each and every session to ensure the physical safety, and comfort of your child.  For this reason, I will never put babies in a position that I feel would put them at physical risk. Babies should always be well supported by props and/or adult hands. Most importantly, their own hands/arms etc, should not be what keeps their head held up! Sometimes final images lead us to believe this is what’s happening. Rest assured, at Jennifer McNeil Photography, we only pose babies with safety in mind. Composites are seldom used here, but would be the most appropriate for certain final images.

Safe positioning of babies for newborn photos also ensures babies’ airways are open properly. This means poses do not increase any strain on their breathing. My background working closely with nurses in the hospital has helped me to learn safe positioning of babies. I am also Safety Certified by Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International. This is a leading newborn photography association dedicated to educating newborn photographers with internationally recognized and standardized APNPI credentials.
