First, know that I think you are amazing! That said, you may still be asking yourself “what if I feel self-conscious about my body for maternity photos?” The number of new parents who express these concerns to me while carrying their baby is astounding. It is my wish that all birthing people could see themselves as I do – radiant, amazing people doing a magical thing growing new life. So let’d delve into how you can embrace your radiance and overcome any body image concerns you may have.
At the core, maternity photos are about celebrating your unique journey. Every curve, stretch mark, blemish and change in your body is part of that journey and tells the story of the growth and love within you. Your body is creating life and these photos will showcase the bond you are already forming with your unborn baby.
While it is completely normal to have self-conscious thoughts once in a while, you can still challenge them when they do creep in. Give yourself love instead of fixating on perceived flaws, and remind yourself of the power and strength within you. This time is fleeting, 9 months passing by in the blink of an eye, so try to pause every now and then to celebrate the truly miraculous thing your body is doing.

Another great reason to choose a professional photographer for your maternity photos is the fact that most who specialize specifically in maternity photography also offer a variety of gowns and wardrobe choices for your photo shoot. Selecting the right attire can significantly boost your confidence during the photoshoot. The right clothing should make you feel both comfortable and beautiful, and gowns made specifically for maternity photography do just that.
If you are hesitant to have a maternity photo shoot, take a moment to think about your purpose for the photos. The images created in a maternity photo session are not about chasing the latest trends, achieving some sort of perfection, or “fixing” any perceived flaws; they are about celebrating this time of anticipation, excitement, and love you have for your child. The emotional significance of a maternity photoshoot is far greater than any negative self-perceptions.
Listen to those around you who love and support you. Try to see yourself through their eyes. Your partner, friends, and family, can be a great source of encouragement. When you stop to see yourself through their eyes, it may help you appreciate the beauty and power of motherhood.
Pregnancy, although beautiful, undoubtedly takes a physical toll on your body and an emotional toll as well. Engage in self-care practices that make you feel good. Taking a relaxing bath, practicing prenatal yoga, or scheduling a pregnancy massage gives you space to appreciate your body for the amazing work it is doing.
It is my sincere hope that this helps you feel less self-conscious about your body and embrace pregnancy and maternity photos. Your body is incredible and you deserve to be celebrated. Your baby’s story is unfolding as your body changes and documenting that is a gift you can share with your child as they grow. When you look back on the photos, together, you will both see the beauty, strength, and love that define this journey.
