Pregnancy is a Journey

Maternity photos serve as a tangible and lasting image of a significant transformative journey that pregnant people embark upon. Knowing what a maternity photo shoot will cost, while understanding the true value, is the first step in planning for a successful session. In this blog I will outline some of the cost factors of a maternity session and how to budget for the session you deserve.

Why Maternity Photos?

As pregnancy has become more celebrated in recent years, the popularity of professional maternity portraits has also risen. Expectant parents can celebrate and showcase the beauty of pregnancy while emphasizing the natural glow and radiance of expectant mothers. Photos can, and are, created of families, couples, or individuals. Social media is flooded with these images, and more importantly, families display them in photo albums and on the walls in their home – all to share the joy of the impending arrival.

Factors That Influence Maternity Photo Shoot Costs

The main factor at play that influence the overall maternity photo shoot cost is the photographer’s experience and expertise. Location of the session, duration and complexity of the shoot, and the products or services included also factor in. Some photographers charge more or less depending on the location and time of the session, while other’s charge purely based on experience and quality of service.

Studio vs On Location Sessions

Photographers with a studio have a certain amount of overhead expenses that on-location photographer’s do not. However, it is important to note that many locations require photo permits, adding to the expense of a maternity photo shoot. In Orange County, California where I am located, almost all beaches require a permit fee. This can be $100-$200 for the duration of a maternity session. Local parks also require permits, though the fee is usually less. Private properties, if they allow photos, can charge even more. Understanding the costs of these location permits will help you budget for your session so that you are not disappointed. Luckily, studio sessions come with zero additional permit costs, so if that’s the look you love, no need to worry.

Session Length and Complexity

At Jennifer McNeil Photography, we do not charge based on photo shoot time, so all sessions have the same session fee regardless of length or type of shoot. This is not always the case for other photographers who charge hourly. Hourly rates vary dependent upon other factors, but keep in mind that late arrivals or sessions that run over in time can often add fees to your original session booking.

Another consideration to keep in mind is the complexity of your session. If you are coming to a photographer who does studio portraits and offers a client closet for use of gowns and wardrobe, along with multiple backdrops and accessories, you should not need to pay more for use of those items. However, if you want a specialty prop such as an old pickup truck or VW bus, there would be a rental fee associated with those items unless otherwise specified. Basically, if you are asking a photographer to do something outside what their portfolio shows, consider asking about any additional costs.

Photographer’s Expertise, Experience and the Level of Service Provided

Generally speaking, photographers with more experience charge more than those without as much expertise. A lot of this has to do with the fact that experienced photographers who have grown their business, have also grown the level of service they provide to clients over time. A true professional photographer continues to educate themselves on best practices, and how to provide the best possible experience to their clients. That investment in education is an additional expense, but the value it provides you as the client is immeasurable. Furthermore, experienced photographers often invest in top-quality equipment, ensuring that every aspect of the photoshoot, from lighting to composition, is executed flawlessly. This commitment to excellence translates into stunning, high-quality images that exceed clients’ expectations.

Additionally, seasoned photographers typically have a keen eye for detail and creativity honed through years of practice and experimentation. They can effortlessly capture the unique essence and personality of their subjects, resulting in timeless and captivating photographs. While the initial cost of hiring an experienced photographer may be higher, the unparalleled level of professionalism, expertise, and creativity they bring to the table makes it a worthwhile investment. Ultimately, when it comes to capturing life’s most precious moments, the value of hiring an experienced photographer cannot be overstated.

National Averages for Maternity photo Shoot Costs

According to recent surveys and industry reports, the average cost of a maternity photo shoot in the United States typically ranges between $200 to $800 for the initial session fee. This may or may not include any physical or digital products. Typically, less experienced photographers will include some digital images (which may or may not be edited) and little to no assistance with wardrobe and artwork. More experienced photographers will provide a higher value service which includes styling consultations and the opportunity to purchase edited digital images and high-quality tangible artwork of those images.

Artwork prices are typically in addition to the session fee and can range from several hundred to several thousand depending on the quality and quantity of pieces you select. In metropolitan areas or regions with a higher cost of living, prices tend to be on the higher end of the spectrum, while rural areas or less densely populated regions may offer lower cost options. It’s crucial for expectant parents to research and compare prices in their specific area to ensure they find a photographer and package that aligns with their budget and preferences.

Tips for Budgeting and Saving on Maternity Photo Shoots

Prioritize Your Needs and Wants

When planning your maternity photo shoot, it’s essential to distinguish between essential services and optional add-ons. Focus on what matters most to you and your vision for the shoot. Consider whether you prioritize high-resolution digital images, professional prints, or additional editing services. By prioritizing your needs over wants, you can ensure that you allocate your budget effectively and avoid overspending on unnecessary extras. Flexibility in a photographer’s collections may also help ensure this. Some photographer’s have fixed collections that include products you may (or may not) want, while others offer product credit to spend on whatever your heart desires.

A full service photographer will offer more than just digital images. While the price tag on printed artwork can be in the hundreds to thousands, most full service photographers also have a lot of additional valuable options for you. When it comes to maternity photos for example, gowns, multiple backdrops, accessories and other props are included to use during your session. Editing is also included in any artwork purchase so you know the images will be printed beautifully for you. Full service photographer aim to make it easy for you to enjoy the experience, capture the memories, and celebrate your moments with stunning artwork.

To avoid last-minute rush fees and secure the best possible rates, it’s crucial to plan ahead and book your maternity photo shoot early. Schedule your session well in advance of your due date to ensure availability and avoid any potential scheduling conflicts. Many photographers offer early booking discounts for clients who plan ahead, so take advantage of these savings opportunities by booking your session as soon as possible. By planning ahead and booking early, you can save money on your maternity photo shoot while ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable experience for yourself and your photographer.

Finding the right balance between budget considerations and the desire for an exceptional maternity photography session is achievable with careful planning and consideration. While it’s important to respect financial constraints, it’s equally vital to recognize the significance of this momentous occasion and the value of preserving it through beautiful photographs.
