The use of a pacifier with a newborn is a very personal choice. Often parents wonder if their baby has to use a pacifier for Newborn Photos? The simple answer is no. But that said, it can be a helpful tool. I know a pacifier for a newborn can be controversial. Worries include that it may be something that interferes with nursing, or develop a dependence on it. There is so much to think about as a new parent but I’m here to support you!
I was where you are once. For my first I was adamantly against the darn thing, but day 2 wrecked me (and my breasts!). It ended up being SUPER helpful. The suck/sleep association was very strong for my son. He used his pacifier for sleep for a little over 2 years. For my second, I decided it didn’t matter either way, and she never wanted or needed it. That’s not to say she didn’t need to be soothed to sleep, however she just had different methods. So a pacifier is not required, but it sometimes comes in handy.
In the studio, it can be helpful to use a pacifier for the newborn photo session. The short stints of use should not have a lasting effect on future sleeping or feeding. Keep in mind, I still don’t stock any because I never want to pressure parents to do anything out of their comfort zone. Feel free to bring a pacifier to any newborn session and we will use it if you’re open to it. I also have many other soothing techniques to try if you’d rather avoid the pacifier all together.
