Modern Conveniences Lose Personal Touch

Creating authentic images of your family is my joy!

The other day I was sitting at Starbucks, sipping my Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha as I enjoy this time of year. While sitting there, it occurred to me that the cups haven’t had drink orders written on them in quite some time. We now have printed stickers with our order. I commented to my husband that I was nostalgic for the hand written order – it felt like a more personal touch. He responded that this printed sticker was likely more efficient – both faster and more accurate. True.

But does this, and all other corporate pushes for perfection come at the cost of a personal approach that appeals to customers? I think is some cases it does. Our roofer recently switched customer service models and now only allows for text messaging instead of a phone call. There’s also little chance for human interaction at self-checkout or ATMs. So, while these conveniences come at a benefit of saving time, or keeping better records, it also comes at a cost. The personal connection and true feeling of customer service is lost.

Commitment to Customer First Approach

My goal has always been a more personal approach to business. While I do make use of an assistant from time to time due to my own chaotic and busy personal and professional schedule (hello work/mom balance!), I love connecting with my clients and families, learning about their lives, goals, children and more. Some of my greatest friends have come from getting to know clients. So in addition to being a more personal touch, it’s also a bit self-serving – I love making new friends!  Jokes aside, in being more focused on wanting to get to know my clients, the process does take a bit more time than say, a JC Penny or mall photo studio. But taking time to get to know you allows me to create photos that better represent who you and your family are.

Your Authentic Self Is Important

Who you are as a person, and what your family’s core values are, are an important part of a successful photo session. Because of my customer first approach, I can better understand how your family works and what is truly important to YOU. Personal over perfect then becomes about the actual photo session experience, in addition to the planning and getting to know one another stage.

Creating a Personal Plan for your Photoshoot

Planning for any photo session can come with a bit of stress which is why I always spend extra time helping you to coordinate outfits. You don’t have to all match exactly or be in a specific color. Creating a sense of cohesion between outfits can keep the focus on the family unit instead of the individual clothing items. Location can also add to, or take away from the session. In my studio, I love using colors that complement your wardrobe and give the overall image a vibrant, uplifting quality. Location shoots can be beautiful, but my approach focuses more on the family and connection than scenery, which is why most prefer an in-studio option.

Personal Touches Add Value to Your Session

Family and newborn photo sessions that have been most successful, are those with complete trust in the process. Answering my questions fully and giving those nuggets of information about yourself allow me to get my wheels turning and come up with ideas that with make this session truly unique for you. Do you have a hobby? Is there something your whole family is into that sparks joy? How can we implement that, or give a nod to that in the session? These questions go through my mind so that I can add your personal touch and create photos specifically with you in mind.

The Perfect Photo

These days so much of what we see is rooted in perceived perfection. Instagram posts, for one, are full of ideal moments that create a sense that the poster has a picture perfect life. So what is a perfect photo? Does it exist? Is it different from one person to the next? Is it based on what others see when they look at the photo, or what you see? Or the moment itself? Firstly, I don’t think we should strive for perfection with photos.

Again, my approach is more personal. So a photo of a child making a silly face that is uniquely his, would be more fitting than that of the same child sitting uncomfortably in a textbook “perfect pose.” To me, a perfect photoshoot, if such a thing existed, is one where a client can be at ease. Being able to relax and allow me to capture your family is goal number one.
